\u201cWell, there is that,\u201d Phelan said, closing his eyes and leaning back against the wall. \u201cOf course, we prepare for everything as usual and hope that we don\u2019t need to actually use half the plans we make. Sound right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs always,\u201d Matt murmured. \u201cRegardless, we know we\u2019re dealing with both.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a question of them being together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt nodded slowly. I wonder if we could send a group out to have a look around the immediate area\u2014a day\u2019s ride out or so in a couple directions.<\/em> His brow furrowed as he leaned against the anvil, crossing his arms and staring up at the ceiling. There was nothing to make out in the shadows up there, just layers of old soot and a peppering of old scorch marks from sparks and metal fragments that had hit the roof over his nearly two decades of work there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich do you think is the more immediate threat?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt startled, tearing his gaze from the familiar constellation of marks above their heads to look at Phelan again, who regarded him now with a curious, serious look. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe raiders or things rising again\u2014which do you think is the more immediate threat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA camazotzi<\/em> just attacked my nephew in the ravine. Which do you<\/em> think is the more immediate threat?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan just smiled. \u201cThen we\u2019re of a mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe question is what do we do about it?\u201d<\/p>\n
