She stared at me, silent, shocked, then her jaw tightened, a spark flaring in her eyes. She was angry<\/em>. I tried not to look at her. I didn\u2019t need to know that the truth had slammed home\u2014because it was<\/em> the truth. There wasn\u2019t any doubt in my mind that my uncle would do anything he thought feasible to protect us, and keeping us inside the wards was simply the most expedient of the options available to him.<\/p>\n

What I hadn\u2019t quite expected was how angry it seemed to have made Kailey\u2014an anger I couldn\u2019t quite fully understand. I\u2019d only brought it up because I\u2019d hoped that it would make her leave me alone for a while with my thoughts instead of sitting there and staring at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe can\u2019t do that,\u201d she finally said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe can absolutely do that,\u201d I countered, closing my eyes. \u201cWe\u2019re not adults, Kay. The only ones he really can\u2019t force to stay inside the wards are Gwen and Kurt and Tory and Anne.\u201d<\/p>\n

She started to pace. I sighed, sinking deeper into my pillows. A pounding started to rise behind my eyes and I wasn\u2019t sure it was from the attack by the camazotzi<\/em> or if it was from trying to get through to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cKay,\u201d I said slowly, carefully. \u201cIf there is anything you want to do on the other side of those wards, go and do it now before he tells you that you can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere isn\u2019t anything,\u201d she said quickly, though I suspected the lie as soon as the words left her lips. I sighed.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s something, she just doesn\u2019t want to tell me what. That\u2019s fine. I have my own damn secrets, too. Let\u2019s just keep them.<\/em> \u201cFine,\u201d I mumbled, adjusting my blankets. I was dizzy, even laying down. \u201cI\u2019m going the hell to sleep. Do me a favor and tell the others I\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, well. I\u2019ll be better in the morning. See you at breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll know something\u2019s wrong when you miss dinner,\u201d she said. I cracked an eye open to see her standing a few feet away, her arms crossed, wearing as stubborn of an expression as I\u2019d ever seen.<\/p>\n

I sighed again. \u201cCan you just let me sleep, please?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her lips thinned. For a second, I thought she was going to say no.<\/p>\n

Then she nodded, her arms dropping to her sides. \u201cOkay. I\u2019ll see you in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n

I watched her go, then tugged my blankets closer. I was cold even though I was burning up. If this was what getting hit by something that could poison people with the old blood felt like, I never wanted to get hit again.<\/p>\n
