They crested the hill and walked past the forge, spotting the others after a few seconds more. Phelan couldn\u2019t see anyone missing from their informal council, not that he\u2019d expected anyone to be missing. He\u2019d suspected that he and Jacqueline would be the last to arrive. He nodded to Matt as they joined the knot clustered beneath the trees that were no longer young as the late afternoon sun shone through the branches.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast to arrive as usual,\u201d Thordin said with a grin, the good-natured teasing welcome, especially in the fact of what they were about to discuss. \u201cWhy am I not surprised?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause if I\u2019m not here first, I\u2019m going to be last,\u201d Phelan answered, the ghost of a smile curving his lips before it faded as he looked at Matt. \u201cWhat have you told them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing yet,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were waiting for you and Jac.\u201d<\/p>\n

There hadn\u2019t been much<\/em> need for that, but Phelan had suspected that Matt would wait, if only to have Phelan for backup when the questions started flying\u2014and so Phelan could explain what little he knew about the situation involving Lin and the camazotzi<\/em>.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t looking forward to explaining any of that.<\/p>\n
