\u201cWe all do,\u201d Neve said after the silence that followed, silence that was so loud that it felt deafening. She crossed her arms, her brows knitting. \u201cBut they left us enough to work with\u2014they bought us time and we\u2019ve done a lot with it. For now, though, we have to think about protecting the kids and everyone else that\u2019s trusted us for all these years to make sure that they\u2019re safe. That\u2019s our job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan reached out to put his hand on Matt\u2019s shoulder. He squeezed it gently even as Hecate wrapped her arms around Matt\u2019s waist. The other man sighed, squeezing his eyes shut for a few seconds. It was a familiar gesture, but one that Phelan would admit that he hadn\u2019t seen in a long time\u2014one he\u2019d hoped that he\u2019d never have to witness again.<\/p>\n

We all made the mistake years ago of hoping the hard times had passed, that with Thom and Marin gone, the threat would be gone, too. We all knew it wasn\u2019t, but we let ourselves believe that it would be. We just let it go.<\/em> Phelan closed his eyes for a moment. What fools we were.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cRight,\u201d Matt murmured. \u201cWell, the kids won\u2019t be happy and neither will about half the rest, but there\u2019s nothing for it. We\u2019ll have to restrict everyone\u2019s movements, keep everyone we can inside the walls and inside the wards. No one goes out alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBack to that,\u201d J.T. murmured.<\/p>\n

Matt nodded firmly. \u201cYeah. Back to that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are some people who aren\u2019t going to like that,\u201d Carolyn said softly. \u201cLike the ones who never experienced it the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone who lives here is party to the same agreement,\u201d Matt said. \u201cThey listen and do what\u2019s necessary for the safety of everyone. It\u2019s time to test that resolve.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
