Hecate waited until they were a dozen feet away before she glanced at Lin, her voice quiet and gentle. \u201cWas it voices or a vision?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA voice,\u201d he said, swallowing hard. \u201cA knowing. I just\u2014I knew. I know. They\u2019re not here to cause trouble or to hurt us, they\u2019re looking for something and someone and it\u2019s important that we listen to them and try to help. I just\u2014I just know<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is insane.<\/em> Kailey stared blankly at her cousin even as her stomach dropped. \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

He started to shake his head, then stopped, wincing and pressing the heel of his hand against his temple. \u201cJust\u2014it\u2019s never been like this before, not exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom what I understand, before the end, your mother heard someone\u2019s voice, too,\u201d Hecate said softly. \u201cAnd she knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe end,\u201d Lin echoed. \u201cYou mean before meteorfall?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate nodded. \u201cSomeone was warning her. It doesn\u2019t surprise me that someone would reach out and warn her son, too.\u201d She drew a deep breath, exhaling it softly in a sigh as she stared at the two of them. \u201cSomething was bound to happen someday. We always knew that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2014Mum. What is that supposed to mean?\u201d Kailey looked between Lin and her mother. \u201cWhat is going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mother glanced out through the open gates toward where Matt, Phelan, and Carolyn had stopped in the killing fields, waiting for the riders to approach. \u201cI suspect we\u2019ll know in a few minutes,\u201d she said, her lips barely moving as she spoke.<\/p>\n

A chill crept down Kailey\u2019s spine. \u201cWhat if he\u2019s wrong? What if\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father knows what he\u2019s about, Kailey,\u201d Hecate said, her tone measured, reassuring. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think Lin\u2019s wrong. Not at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if he is\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not,\u201d Lin said, his voice steady and gaze distant. \u201cNot about this. Not today.<\/p>\n
