\u201cSomeday, I hope you\u2019ll trust him as much as you trusted me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Matt blinked away tears that threatened as his sister\u2019s voice echoed in the back of his head. The words had come a long time ago\u2014long before there was any real indication that Lin had inherited any of his parents\u2019 gifts.<\/p>\n

As if there ever could have been any doubt that he would.<\/p>\n

Carolyn glanced at him sidelong, her voice coming as a murmur. \u201cLongfellow and company are confirming what Lin said about the riders. Of course, they\u2019re also confirming what Kailey said. They\u2019re armed, six of them, one in fairly rough shape.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey can\u2019t give me what their intentions are, though,\u201d Matt murmured, staring straight ahead, toward the gap where the riders would appear.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t we all wish,\u201d Carolyn said, then smiled weakly. \u201cYou believe him, don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt\u2019s chin dipped in a nod. On the other side of him, Phelan smiled wryly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d be fools not to,\u201d he said softly. \u201cAll things considered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt glanced at him for a second, then shook his head. \u201cEvery time you say that, I get shivers down my spine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEven this time?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt shook his head again. \u201cYou\u2019re impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlways,\u201d Phelan said, still smiling. \u201cBut tin this case, my gut\u2019s telling me he\u2019s right. They\u2019re looking for something or someone and they need our help. Possibly his<\/em> help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHis help,\u201d Matt echoed, deadpanning at Phelan as they drew to a stop about a hundred yards away from the gates. \u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith whatever quest they\u2019re on,\u201d Phelan said quietly, then shrugged. \u201cI don\u2019t know for sure. Seeing the future was your sister and Thom\u2019s power. Mine\u2019s just trying to piece together a thousand stories and prophecies into a patchwork that almost makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost,\u201d Matt said, swallowing a sigh. \u201cUsually.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes,\u201d Phelan said, then grinned.<\/p>\n
