05"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>[This post is from Thomas Merlin Ambrose&#8217;s point of view.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kailey stopped pacing, stopped dead in her tracks, and stared at him hard.\u00a0 \u201cTime out,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glared at her, my heart in my throat, then looked back at Phelan.\u00a0 \u201cHow do you know?\u00a0 Did someone\u2014did someone tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m kicking myself for not realizing it,\u201d Phelan said, shaking his head.\u00a0 He squeezed his eyes shut, pressed the heels of his hands against them, as if he was trying to hold something in, something painful and strong.\u00a0 \u201cBut I only saw him for a moment.\u00a0 He felt familiar but I didn\u2019t\u2014<em>d\u00e9ithe agus arrachtaigh<\/em>, how did I not know it then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a lot going on,\u201d I said quietly.\u00a0 \u201cAnd you\u2019ve had a bit of a crazy day already, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That, at least, won a snort from him.\u00a0 He shook his head, letting his hands fall away.\u00a0 \u201cYou sound so much like both of them sometimes that it hurts, Lin.\u00a0 Truly.\u00a0 Way to look for a silver lining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would your sister have sent them looking for us?\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand, Uncle Phelan.\u00a0 I thought\u2014I thought she\u2019d given up on you and on us.\u00a0 That\u2019s why she never came back after\u2014\u201d Kailey grimaced.\u00a0 \u201cAfter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStories,\u201d Phelan said, shaking his head as he glanced toward her.\u00a0 \u201cShe told them stories and those stories were never forgotten.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t stay long enough to hear all of it.\u00a0 It just hurt too much.\u00a0 But they\u2019re come looking for the king born again.\u00a0 Some prophecies never die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe king born again,\u201d I echoed, my stomach dropping.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2014you sound like you know what that means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do you,\u201d Phelan said, smiling sadly.\u00a0 \u201cSo do all of us.\u00a0 This quest they\u2019re on, it\u2019s no fool\u2019s errand.\u00a0 I just wish I knew why it was so damn important right this second, you know?\u00a0 But I don\u2019t.\u00a0 I know something\u2019s changed.\u00a0 I just don\u2019t know what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him for a few seconds, feeling hollow.\u00a0 I wondered if my parents had ever felt the same, when they\u2019d been sitting where I was.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered if they ever felt like railing against the threads of fate even as they wanted to embrace them with open hearts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what does that mean?\u201d Kailey asked softly, drawing closer to the two of us.\u00a0 \u201cYou guys seem like we\u2019re talking in riddles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s because we are,\u201d Phelan said, staring at me.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s because we are.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[This post is from Thomas Merlin Ambrose&#8217;s point of view.] Kailey stopped pacing, stopped dead in her tracks, and stared at him hard.\u00a0 \u201cTime out,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cWhat?\u201d I glared at her, my heart in my throat, then looked back &hellip;
