\u201cOkay,\u201d Kailey said slowly, once again looking between us.\u00a0 Her gaze was wary, now, her movements slow and careful, the way you move when you\u2019re trying not to startle or scare something that spooks easily.\u00a0 \u201cSo are you guys going to actually lay this out for me or is this one of those things I\u2019ll find out on accident later?\u201d<\/p>\n

Bile crept up into my throat and I swallowed hard, closing my eyes again.\u00a0 It probably wasn\u2019t fair to leave her in the dark, not about this.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure how much it was going to be a shift in her world, but I knew how much it might change mine\u2014<\/p>\n

\u2014and how much it was going to change Tory\u2019s, if I\u2019d read everything right.<\/p>\n

Phelan stood and started to pace.\u00a0 Kailey blinked, then sat down next to me, her brows knitting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2014Uncle Phelan, I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 I don\u2019t\u2014you don\u2019t have to tell me.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cNo, it\u2019s not okay.\u00a0 What do you know about the old legends?\u00a0 Which of the old stories have you read?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike\u2014like all of the books?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot.\u00a0 I like reading.\u201d<\/p>\n

One corner of Phelan\u2019s mouth twitched into a smile.\u00a0 \u201cA good habit, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what Mom always says.\u201d\u00a0 Her brow furrowed.\u00a0 \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he admitted.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I won\u2019t be.\u00a0 But that\u2019s all right.\u00a0 We\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur world\u2019s about to change, isn\u2019t it?\u201d I said quietly.\u00a0 \u201cTurned on its ear?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan stared at me for a few seconds.<\/p>\n

Then he just nodded.<\/p>\n
