Kailey threw up her hands, glaring at both of us in equal measure.\u00a0 \u201cThere you go again!\u00a0 Riddles!\u00a0 Why the hell is it always riddles<\/em> when I need you to tell me something straight?\u00a0 I don\u2019t get it.\u201d\u00a0 Her expression contorted, growing hard, and she stood up.\u00a0 Three long strides took her to the door.<\/p>\n

Phelan startled.\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to go get answers.\u201d\u00a0 She jerked the door open and if Phelan hadn\u2019t sprung into action to grab her, she\u2019d have been out the door before I, at least, could have reacted.\u00a0 I was already reeling, especially since I understood what the implications of all of this might be.<\/p>\n

She isn\u2019t ready to handle it.\u00a0 I\u2019m not even ready to handle it and I already know\u2014or at least suspect.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cKailey,\u201d Phelan said, his tone measured, \u201cplease sit back down.\u00a0 Let me explain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you were doing such<\/em> a good job of it already, Uncle Phelan.\u201d\u00a0 She jerked her arm from his grasp.\u00a0 \u201cNo.\u00a0 I want to see and hear this for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was out the door before he could stop her.\u00a0 Grimacing, I shoved myself to my feet even as Phelan cursed under his breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t going to end well,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Phelan said grimly, \u201cit\u2019s not.\u00a0 Come on.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t wait for me to catch up, though that happened soon enough once we were in the hall.\u00a0 Kailey was too far ahead of us already, though, and neither of us were able to get a hand on her before she was at the door to the room where her father was meeting with the riders.<\/p>\n

She yanked that door open in time for all three of us to hear the lead rider\u2019s voice speaking.<\/p>\n

\u201c…so we\u2019re on a quest to find the prophesied once and future king.\u00a0 We had reason to believe he might be here\u2014or that you would know where to find him.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
