She could tell that he was trying not to sigh again, even as his fingers tightened around the rail.\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you make of it?\u00a0 The story?\u00a0 The explanation?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate looked up at him, her brow arching slightly.\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you <\/em>make of it?\u00a0 You have concerns\u2014I can hear the doubt in your voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do,\u201d Matt admitted quietly.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m just not sure that I should, all things considered.\u00a0 After everything we\u2019ve seen over the past twenty years, should anything surprise me anymore?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course they should.\u201d\u00a0 She smiled.\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s a life without wonder and surprise?\u00a0 What\u2019s a world<\/em> without it?\u00a0 Cold and dark and lonely and terrifying, and none of those are something I\u2019d wish upon even the worst of my enemies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve grown more merciful with age.\u201d<\/p>\n

She snorted softly.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t change the subject, Matthew.\u00a0 What, precisely, about their story bothers you?\u00a0 Is it because they had the stories from Aoife originally?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cMaybe yes, but that\u2019s not all of it.\u00a0 I just\u2014the once and future king?\u00a0 Arthur?\u00a0 Really?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe really existed, though not in the way the books say he did.\u201d\u00a0 She ran a hand up and down his spine.\u00a0 \u201cAnd he had children and they had children\u2014and Cameron is proof of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt startled.\u00a0 \u201cCameron?\u00a0 But I\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are two sides to every family, mo chro\u00ed<\/em>.\u00a0 We both know that, even if you\u2019ve momentarily forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n

He winced again and looked down at his hands.\u00a0 \u201cSo you\u2019re saying\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m saying the sword chose him for a reason,\u201d Hecate said gently, cutting him off.\u00a0 \u201cSometimes, the magic knows.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot sometimes,\u201d Matt murmured.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she agreed.\u00a0 \u201cNot sometimes.\u00a0 It always knows\u2014even when we don\u2019t.\u00a0 It does and there is little of it that we can deny.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what do we tell them?\u00a0 Do we tell them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n
