\u201cSo what did we miss?\u201d<\/p>\n

I jerked at the sound of Artorius\u2019s voice, then winced as pain lanced through me.\u00a0 Kay\u2019s grip tightened a little and I could almost hear her teeth grinding.\u00a0 She turned more quickly than I did toward the sound of his voice, lips already starting to curl into a snarl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere the actual hell were you?\u201d she demanded, her tone abruptly even more angry than she\u2019d been earlier.\u00a0 I barely suppressed a wince that had nothing to do with my physical discomfort as I turned around.<\/p>\n

Tory stopped a few feet from us, his hands up in a gesture of surrender.\u00a0 Anne was with him and she blinked in surprise at Kailey.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were out by the lakeshore,\u201d Anne said.\u00a0 \u201cWe didn\u2019t know anything was happening until we got back here with our catch.\u201d\u00a0 Her brow furrowed as she looked between us.\u00a0 \u201cSo I\u2019ll second Tory\u2019s question\u2014what did we miss?\u00a0 What happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

I grimaced and shook my head slightly.\u00a0 \u201cWe have visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVisitors don\u2019t usually get the Hunt this nervous or make your uncle disappear, Lin.\u201d\u00a0 Tory crossed his arms.\u00a0 \u201cAunt Tala said he went for a walk when I said I was going to go see him up at the forge.\u00a0 There\u2019s something going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d I said, then started walking\u2014stumbling, really.\u00a0 Anne reached for me but I just managed to dodge out of her reach.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know what I was going to tell them, and I hurt too much to think clearly anyway.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll sleep and then I\u2019ll figure it out\u2014or maybe someone will figure it out for me.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cLin?\u201d<\/p>\n
