\u201cWhat happened to them?\u201d<\/p>\n

He knew that he shouldn\u2019t have asked the question.\u00a0 It simply slipped out before he could think too much about it, and as soon as the words left his lips, he regretted them.<\/p>\n

Pain flickered through her expression and she shook her head.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s too long a story for this early in the morning.\u00a0 They\u2019re…well.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t seen them in a long time and I don\u2019t expect to soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you still\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u00a0 It\u2019s silly.\u201d\u00a0 She shook her head, not making eye contact with him.\u00a0 \u201cBut it\u2019s just one of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whatever words that were coming shriveled on his tongue.\u00a0 He knew that feeling all too well.\u00a0 There were a lot of things in his life that had been \u2018just one of those things\u2019 and it was nothing that he could begrudge her.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t something he could begrudge anyone, nor did he want to.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should wake your friends,\u201d she said softly.\u00a0 \u201cGet something to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably,\u201d he agreed, glancing at his slumbering companions again.\u00a0 \u201cBut if I go, who\u2019ll look after David while we\u2019re gone?\u201d<\/p>\n

One corner of her mouth curved into a smile.\u00a0 \u201cI take it you don\u2019t trust me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot that far,\u201d he admitted.\u00a0 \u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cParanoid,\u201d she said, though there was a hint of humor to her voice, as if she found it amusing.<\/p>\n

Bryant just shrugged.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t wrong\u2014not by a long shot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
