\u201cYou were out,\u201d Bryant said, glancing to the side, as if checking something, before his gaze met David\u2019s again.\u00a0 \u201cWe spent quite a bit of time speaking with him and the other folks in charge here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Folks in charge?<\/em>\u00a0 For a few seconds, he squeezed his eyes shut.\u00a0 There was a faint pounding behind his eyes, but that could have come from any number of causes.\u00a0 From the stories, that\u2019s not like him.\u00a0 He advises, doesn\u2019t lead.<\/em><\/p>\n

Maybe something changed.<\/em><\/p>\n

His hand shook as he reached up to rub his temple. \u00a0\u201cPhelan,\u201d he said quietly.\u00a0 \u201cYou mean Phelan O\u2019Credne.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe same,\u201d she said softly.\u00a0 \u201cThough he doesn\u2019t use that name often.\u00a0 It\u2019s usually Phelan Conrad.\u201d<\/p>\n

David\u2019s lips thinned and he opened his eyes, studying her for a few seconds.\u00a0 Her honey-blonde hair was braided back from her face, the lamplight painting golden highlights into the strands.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t quite tell how old she might be in the light of the lamp and he frowned slightly, his eyes watering slightly despite the dim\u2014or perhaps because of it.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all right,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cHe has his reasons for it.\u00a0 You can ask him yourself later, when you\u2019re up to talking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m talking now,\u201d David said, sagging a little more against the pillows.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are,\u201d she agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s early,\u201d Bryant said.\u00a0 \u201cThe others are still asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEarly,\u201d David echoed.\u00a0 \u201cHow long have we been here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust since yesterday afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then it hasn\u2019t been so long.\u00a0 Okay.<\/em>\u00a0 He closed his eyes for a second.<\/p>\n
