I closed my eyes for a second and sucked in a breath.\u00a0 Somehow, I knew he wasn\u2019t going to go that far\u2014he was probably only a few feet away from my door and probably just standing out there, staring up at the sky.\u00a0 That was Tory\u2014that was the Tory I\u2019d known my whole life.<\/p>\n

How would what we were about to embark on change that?\u00a0 Would it?<\/p>\n

I paused in the middle of pulling on a clean shirt.\u00a0 The fact that I didn\u2019t know the answer made me momentarily sick to my stomach.<\/p>\n

This was the kind of shit I think Uncle Phelan tried to warn me about.\u00a0 Folks don\u2019t like it when you invoke prophecy and stuff like that.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then again, growing up where we had and the way we had, why should it have surprised any of us that something like this could\u2014or would\u2014ever happen?<\/p>\n

But wasn\u2019t fear of her reaction why I\u2019d been trying not<\/em> to say anything to Kailey?\u00a0 Why I\u2019d been so reticent to say anything<\/em>?\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t my own fear of what was about to unfold\u2014I knew that much.\u00a0 While I was definitely nervous about what was coming, I wouldn\u2019t say I was entirely scared<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But Phelan prepared you for something to maybe happen.\u00a0 Your parents prepared you for something to maybe happen.\u00a0 This was always something that was within the realm of possibility, at least for you.\u00a0 The others?\u00a0 Maybe not so much.<\/em><\/p>\n

I exhaled a sigh, stepping into sandals and heading for my door, my pace slower than I\u2019d have liked.<\/p>\n

Everything really did<\/em> hurt, and while the room wasn\u2019t spinning, there was definitely some vertigo that I was dealing with.\u00a0 Aunt Jac would probably kill me for being out of bed so soon after getting hit by the camazotzi<\/em>\u2014but I also didn\u2019t think she\u2019d be surprised by it, either.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d read enough of my parents\u2019 journals to know that.<\/p>\n

Head in the game, Lin.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got work to do, starting with making sure your best friend doesn\u2019t go flying off into some kind of\u2014something.<\/em><\/p>\n

Gods and monsters, I hope he\u2019s still right outside the door.<\/em><\/p>\n
