\u201cOpen the door,\u201d David murmured.\u00a0 \u201cThey\u2019re almost here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sound of his friend\u2019s voice startled Bryant\u2014he\u2019d been half certain David had fallen asleep again, sitting there with Isabelle.\u00a0 She had her arms around him, holding him protectively, cradling him against her chest since he\u2019d refused to lie back down all the way\u2014though he hadn\u2019t told any of them why.\u00a0 Bryant had chalked it up to his friend\u2019s normal stubbornness and tried to get on with preparing for what he was certain was going to be a day filled with more questions from the village\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

Regardless of what the healer who\u2019d come had said, he expected that there were still going to be a lot<\/em> more questions asked of him and his friends.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t blame them\u2014he\u2019d have questions, too, if their positions had been reversed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho\u2019s almost here?\u201d Bryant asked, his brow furrowing.\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust\u2014open the door,\u201d David said again, pushing himself up just a little bit straighter in the bed.\u00a0 \u201cThey have as many questions as we have for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMore questions,\u201d Isabelle said, shaking her head.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re not up for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am up for it,\u201d David said firmly.\u00a0 \u201cAnd if you\u2019re not going to open the door, I\u2019ll do it myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bryant cursed under his breath as David started to shift toward the edge of the bed.\u00a0 Isabelle tried to keep him still, but even the slightest glance told Bryant that she wasn\u2019t going to be able to stop him\u2014not only was her angle bad, David was just too determined.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right, all right,\u201d Bryant said, crossing toward the door.\u00a0 \u201cYou win, fine.\u00a0 I\u2019m opening the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re part of why we\u2019re here, Bryant,\u201d David said quietly, going still as he watched.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s important.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe you,\u201d Bryant said.<\/p>\n
