\u201cWhat do you mean, David?\u201d Isabelle asked softly.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re not\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking sense?\u201d he shook his head, smiling weakly.\u00a0 \u201cI guess not, but then do I ever?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMore often than you don\u2019t,\u201d Bryant said.\u00a0 He was still watching Lin and Tory, watching their expressions, trying to gauge their<\/em> reaction to David\u2019s murmured words.\u00a0 The fact that Lin was smiling was something he couldn\u2019t quite sort out\u2014he wasn\u2019t sure if that was a good sign or something that should worry him even more than he already was.<\/p>\n

Take it as a good sign.\u00a0 You don\u2019t need to borrow more trouble than you\u2019re already trying to deal with\u2014no more problems than what you\u2019re already facing.<\/em> \u00a0He barely managed to suppress the urge to rub his temple as if a headache was coming on\u2014one wasn\u2019t, not yet, but it was quite possibly only a matter of time.<\/p>\n

Maybe it won\u2019t be this time.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to pretend that either makes sense or isn\u2019t important,\u201d Tory said slowly, relinquishing David\u2019s hand but not moving away.\u00a0 \u201cBut I\u2019m guessing it\u2019s part of why you\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPerceptive,\u201d David said, reaching to rub his eyes.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s something like that.\u00a0 There\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s complicated.\u00a0 That\u2019s the short version.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the long one?\u201d<\/p>\n

David gave him a watery smile.\u00a0 \u201cYou might want to sit down for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tory glanced at Lin, who shrugged slightly.\u00a0 Then he smiled faintly and pulled up a chair.<\/p>\n
