The knots in Bryant\u2019s stomach tightened.\u00a0 He hadn\u2019t quite admitted to himself how nervous he was about this part, about David opening up to people that they were probably<\/em> looking for about what they were out here doing and why.<\/p>\n

Their reaction is going to make or break this.<\/em><\/p>\n

The stories he\u2019d grown up on came with dozens of examples of heroes rejecting their role at first, and if there was one thing that he knew, it was that David was looking for people that were supposed to end up being heroes\u2014being legends<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Most of those people tended to say no and walk away before circumstances forced them into doing something else.\u00a0 That always meant when heroes walked away, things got worse.<\/p>\n

The world out there\u2019s bad enough already.\u00a0 I\u2019d hate to see what would come with the \u201cworse\u201d\u2014especially if it means something happening to the people here.\u00a0 It seems like they went through a lot before now, judging from their defenses and their paranoia about strangers, especially armed ones.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to see anything happen to them here, even having just met these people.<\/em><\/p>\n

He became abruptly aware of Lin watching him even as David cleared his throat in preparation to speak.\u00a0 The young man\u2019s gaze remained intent for a few seconds more, only moving on once David had said the first few words.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe grew up on a lot of stories,\u201d David began.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m sure that you guys did, too, for better or worse, maybe even some of the same ones.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know where all of them came from, but I know at least a few my dad had from my mother\u2014I never really knew Aoife, since she left when I was still really little.\u00a0 Bryant remembers her better than any of the rest of us.\u00a0 Most of the stories were older than old and some of them didn\u2019t make a lot of sense, at least not the first half dozen or so times I heard them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they started to,\u201d Lin murmured.\u00a0 \u201cThe older you got, the more sense they started to make.\u00a0 The more meaning<\/em> they started to have.\u201d<\/p>\n

David nodded.\u00a0 \u201cYes, exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause that\u2019s when your gift started to manifest.\u201d<\/p>\n
