Tory\u2019s head whipped around and he squinted at Lin.\u00a0 \u201cI thought you didn\u2019t know anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cNot for sure.\u00a0 Just\u2014Tory.\u00a0 Just listen to him.\u00a0 We\u2019ve heard these bedtime stories, too, just probably in different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tory\u2019s expression slackened.\u00a0 \u201cBetween you and my mother, I don\u2019t know which direction to go in with any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust listen,\u201d Lin said quietly.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m as interested in this as you are\u2014and connected to this as you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bryant watched them both for a few seconds, the knots in his stomach growing ever tighter as the fear of how they might react increased steadily.\u00a0 While Lin\u2019s quiet was reassuring, he wasn\u2019t entirely certain that Tory was going to react well to what David was going to tell them, especially if what Bryant was starting to guess at might be true.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s the once and future that David\u2019s been looking for.\u00a0 And Lin is another piece of that puzzle\u2014the Taliesin That Will Be, I think, unless I miss my guess.<\/em>\u00a0 He swallowed against a dry throat, sagging against the door\u2019s frame.\u00a0 What if they reject this, though?\u00a0 What if they walk away?<\/em><\/p>\n

It was back to the quandary that was making him queasy in the first place in that scenario, because in these scenarios, destiny didn\u2019t take no for an answer.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t sure of the history of any of the people here trying to cram what was \u2018meant to be\u2019 back down destiny\u2019s throat and that was another factor that worried him.<\/p>\n

If anyone\u2019s tried, succeeded, and not paid any kind of visible consequences…well, first I\u2019d like to meet them.\u00a0 Then I\u2019d like them to help us out here.<\/em><\/p>\n

It was all he could do not to shake his head at himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cFine,\u201d Tory sighed.\u00a0 \u201cWhat stories, then?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLegends of a warrior king and his sword,\u201d David said quietly, wincing slightly as if he realized what he must sound like.\u00a0 \u201cOne destined to return.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tory stared at him for a few seconds.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re kidding, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish,\u201d David said, squeezing his eyes shut for a few seconds.\u00a0 \u201cYou have any idea how long we\u2019ve been away from home looking for this?\u00a0 For\u2014for maybe you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you\u2019re looking for my dad, not me,\u201d Tory said, shaking his head slowly.\u00a0 \u201cThe sword you\u2019re talking about is his, not mine.\u00a0 He\u2019s carried it since before I was born\u2014since he met my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lady of Avalon is your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNeve Vaughan, princess of the Aes Dana<\/em> is my mother.\u00a0 Maybe in some long ago yesterday she was the lady of Avalon.\u00a0 If she was, she never told me that story.\u00a0 She\u2019s just tried to raise my sister and I the best she and my dad can.\u201d\u00a0 Tory stood up, the chair creaking softly as he did.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re not looking for me.\u00a0 You\u2019re looking for Cameron Mackenzie, the Dragon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d David said quietly.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re searching for his son and heir.\u00a0 The Dragon helps make ready.\u00a0 The son is the one who makes it real.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
