Tory stood there for a few seconds, just blinking at David.\u00a0 Lin sighed and waved a hand slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSit back down, Tory.\u00a0 Let him tell it the whole way through.\u201d\u00a0 He looked back at David and smiled a slight smile.\u00a0 \u201cThe story\u2014it was a prophecy more than a story, wasn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

David nodded slowly.\u00a0 \u201cIt was, yeah.\u00a0 It was one that I heard a couple of different versions of over the years, usually told as a story.\u00a0 Once my gift finally cropped up it all started to make more sense.\u201d\u00a0 He rubbed at the spot on his forehead between his eyes.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m sure you\u2019ve both heard variants on the theme.\u00a0 The once and future king, the king destined to return in a time of need, the king betrayed\u2014it depends on what version you\u2019re listening to or reading.\u00a0 I know that we had a few books back home that had versions of the same legends but my dad told me that they weren\u2019t exactly accurate retellings of the tale\u2014that if people back then had told the actual<\/em> story, a lot of folks wouldn\u2019t have believed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI could see that,\u201d Tory said slowly.\u00a0 \u201cI know my dad didn\u2019t believe the true story until later on even though he believed most of what my mom told him.\u00a0 That still doesn\u2019t explain, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d David said.\u00a0 \u201cHow much do you actually know about…about that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stories about the once and future king?\u00a0 King Arthur, the Round Table, all of that?\u201d\u00a0 Tory glanced sidelong to Lin.\u00a0 \u201cA whole hell of a lot between the two of us.\u00a0 This used to be a school before the end of everything.\u00a0 There was a decent collection in the university library and our parents rescued most of the books from said library when everything came crashing down, catalogued it, preserved it.\u00a0 I can show you later if you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

David smiled faintly.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019d be cool, once they let me out of bed again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll see what I can do.\u201d\u00a0 Tory leaned forward, elbows on his knees.\u00a0 \u201cSo the legends and stories were inspired by someone real\u2014that much I know and believe.\u00a0 But a prophecy about his return?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would you think that\u2019s<\/em> so far-fetched?\u201d Lin murmured, closing his eyes.\u00a0 \u201cYou know that he was real, Tory.\u00a0 You know who you\u2019re descended from.\u00a0 Why is it so hard to believe?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tory made an unhappy sound and focused on David again.\u00a0 \u201cSo this prophecy you\u2019re talking about is about the legend of his return in a time of need\u2014of a king reborn?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething like that.\u00a0 It\u2019s not…\u201d he paused, then started again.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s more complicated than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tory heaved a sigh.\u00a0 \u201cIt always is, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Always is.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
