\u201cIt\u2019s weird,\u201d David said, fidgeting a little.\u00a0 \u201cDad didn\u2019t know much about her family, so I just kind of put away all of those questions and assumed I\u2019d never get to ask them.\u00a0 But the\u2026the need to know never quite went away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUncle Phelan can tell you a lot of stories,\u201d Lin said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe even too<\/em> many,\u201d Tory added with a wry smile and a shake of his head.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s filled our heads with one or two that I\u2019m pretty sure pissed off our parents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I didn\u2019t make them angry sometimes, I wouldn\u2019t be doing my job,\u201d Phelan said, slanting a smile at the pair.\u00a0 Of course, their anger was only rarely directed at me.\u00a0 The stories were expected\u2014in some ways, I think even a relief.\u00a0 They knew what I was keeping from the kids.<\/em>\u00a0 His gaze lingered on Lin for a moment longer than Tory and his smile shrank ever-so-slightly.\u00a0 Except Thom and Marin never had a chance to object to the stories I told Lin after they were gone, did they?<\/em><\/p>\n

They wouldn\u2019t have gainsaid him any of it\u2014he was sure of that, especially in Marin\u2019s case\u2014but it still ached sometimes that he never even got to ask.<\/p>\n

They would understand.\u00a0 They would understand.<\/em><\/p>\n

He tore his gaze from Lin, though not fast enough that none of the others in the room noticed how his gaze had lingered there for longer than he\u2019d intended.\u00a0 He focused on David again, taking a deep breath.\u00a0 \u201cWhat would you like to know?\u201d<\/p>\n

David blinked.\u00a0 \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout the family.\u00a0 What would you like to know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI imagine that it would be as illuminating for Lin and Tory as it would be for you,\u201d Phelan said slowly.\u00a0 \u201cEspecially considering why you\u2019re all here.\u201d<\/p>\n

David\u2019s eyes widened.\u00a0 \u201cThen you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
