All of them stared at him in a sort of shocked silence.\u00a0 He\u2019d expected as much, all things considered, though there was the barest hint of a smirk on Lin\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

Of course he\u2019d suspect.\u00a0 Hell, he\u2019s likely already figured it out for himself, what this all means.<\/em><\/p>\n

All Phelan could do was smile weakly and shake his head.\u00a0 \u201cA Taleisin\u2019s curse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a line we\u2019ve heard a thousand times before,\u201d Lin said with a wry smile.\u00a0 \u201cYou must have told her a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan nodded slowly.\u00a0 \u201cAye.\u00a0 Before the retreat.\u00a0 After we thought Seamus was gone.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t believe me at first\u2014why would she, after all?\u00a0 But it made sense later, after our defiance, after all of those wars in the deep and dim yesterdays that are best left to legend and myth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what we\u2019re talking about is legend and myth, Uncle Phelan,\u201d Tory said, staring at him with a gaze that harkened back to not just his father, but to Seamus himself.\u00a0 There were rare moments when Phelan could see his elder cousin in Artorius Mackenzie, and now was one of them.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re talking about a scenario where\u2014\u201d he stopped, staring at him hard for a few seconds as he appeared to collect his thoughts.\u00a0 \u201cHell.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking about a scenario where somehow I\u2019m this king come back in the world\u2019s greatest time of need.\u00a0 Right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan nodded, watching Tory\u2019s face.\u00a0 The teenager didn\u2019t disappoint, his expression melting into a look of incredulity that was truly reminiscent of Seamus Vaughan\u2014so much so that for a second, Phelan\u2019s breath caught as he forgot that it wasn\u2019t, in fact, Seamus he was dealing with.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe both know exactly how ludicrous this sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n
