\u201cIs it making you vulnerable to gods only know what, too?\u201d\u00a0 David\u2019s gaze shifted back to Lin, his brow furrowing slightly.\u00a0 \u201cIt just feels like shit hits me so much harder than it does the rest of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s because it kind of does,\u201d Lin said, glancing from him to Tory and then to Phelan.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a side effect of the Otherworld blood\u2014of the Aes Dana<\/em> blood in you.\u00a0 Some things just hit us harder and worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

David squinted at him for a few seconds, then nodded slowly.\u00a0 \u201cIs that what\u2019s going on with you, too?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBingo,\u201d Lin said with a wry smile.\u00a0 \u201cI got ambushed in the ravines out there.\u00a0 Not sure if you\u2019ve gotten to see them yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

David shook his head slowly.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t really remember anything after we crossed the river.\u201d\u00a0 He looked at Bryant and Isabelle.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re not that far beyond it, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Isabelle said quietly.\u00a0 \u201cNo, we\u2019re not.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure if you were quite awake even when we crossed the river.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was, barely.\u201d\u00a0 David scrubbed a hand across his eyes.\u00a0 \u201cWas trying to hang on until we got here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, at least you managed to stay in the saddle most of the way,\u201d Bryant said, drifting back toward the door.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m going to go take a walk.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMight try up toward the forge,\u201d Phelan said, glancing at him.\u00a0 \u201cEspecially if you wanted to talk to Matt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bryant smiled faintly and inclined his head before he slipped out the door.\u00a0 It clicked softly shut behind him.\u00a0 David seemed to slump slightly at his friend\u2019s departure, tilting his head back to stare at the ceiling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve dragged all of them out here chasing something I wasn\u2019t sure we\u2019d find.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, sounds like we found it,\u201d Isabelle said, squeezing his hand even as her gaze strayed toward Tory.\u00a0 \u201cThough I don\u2019t blame any of you for thinking this is crazy.\u00a0 Most of us did at first, but we weren\u2019t going to let him go alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks for that.\u201d\u00a0 A trace of sarcasm threaded through David\u2019s voice.\u00a0 Phelan couldn\u2019t help but smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe important things sound pretty crazy pretty often,\u201d Phelan said.\u00a0 \u201cYou get used to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you?\u201d his nephew asked.<\/p>\n
