\u201cThat garden there used to be special,\u201d I guessed as she tugged me gently along the path back toward the bridge.\u00a0 \u201cYou guys never talk about it, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she agreed.\u00a0 \u201cWe don\u2019t.\u00a0 We all have our own reasons for that.\u201d\u00a0 She smiled faintly, sadly.\u00a0 My heart ached a little as I saw the pain reflected in her eyes.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t understand why it was important, or why it hurts, but I know that it was.<\/em><\/p>\n

We lapsed into silence as we went further back toward the bridge and the village beyond.\u00a0 The further we got from the barrow and the nearer we got to the ravine again, the tenser I started to get.\u00a0 Carolyn squeezed my hand, as if she was trying to reassure me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019re you thinking?\u201d she asked me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s stopping one of those monsters from getting to me again when we cross the bridge,\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cAunt Caro\u2014Aunt Caro, I saw<\/em> something when I was down there.\u00a0 When I told Uncle Phelan about it he went all kinds of pale and I\u2014I don\u2019t understand why.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fairies will tell us if there\u2019s any danger,\u201d she assured me, gently wrapping her arm around my shoulders again.\u00a0 I leaned into her as we walked, a little bit of the tension draining.\u00a0 \u201cWhen did it happen?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA few seconds before I was attacked,\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2014I saw Mom and Dad and Uncle Drew, but it was a long time ago, back before everything you guys grew up with ended.\u00a0 It was nighttime and they were down there and I don\u2019t know why.\u201d\u00a0 I swallowed hard.\u00a0 \u201c…and I think they could see me, too.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
