Matt cast a puzzled glance at the both of them as Hecate headed to get him the promised blanket.\u00a0 \u201cIs she on her way?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate looked at Thordin, who grimaced and shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cWe could probably start without her,\u201d he admitted.\u00a0 \u201cLike I said, I\u2019m not sure what she was having a word with Neve about and that means I\u2019m really not sure how long their chat\u2019s going to take.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBold of you to assume it\u2019s just some kind of casual chat,\u201d Hecate chided.<\/p>\n

Thordin snorted softly.\u00a0 \u201cBoth of you to assume that\u2019s what I think it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt watched them both for a second and huffed a sigh.\u00a0 \u201cRight, then.\u00a0 What\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate motioned to Thordin to start as she pulled a blanket from a storage chest.\u00a0 Thordin took a deep breath and stretched with a slight wince, as if some old hurt had picked that moment to bother him\u2014or perhaps it was something else.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you feel it, too?\u201d Thordin asked Matt.\u00a0 \u201cThat there\u2019s something in the air?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt stripped off his sodden shirt as Hecate brought him the blanket.\u00a0 For a second, her gaze lingered on bare skin before she turned to pour him a mug of tea.\u00a0 Sometimes, she still saw echoes of C\u00edar when she looked at him, and the conversation he\u2019d interrupted brought those old memories swimming up to the surface.\u00a0 Their physiques were much the same, her long-lost love and her husband\u2019s, two men who shared the same soul that had been bound to hers through the centuries.\u00a0 Matt was mercifully less physically battered, though, something for which she was silently grateful.<\/p>\n

I hope he never gains the scars that C\u00edar had.\u00a0 I hope that things never get so bad here.<\/em><\/p>\n

A faint shiver wracked her.\u00a0 If all of their suppositions were right, they very well could.<\/p>\n
