from the fire, \u201cI really didn\u2019t expect her to say something like that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I glanced toward her with a slight frown.\u00a0 \u201cDid you know she could\u2026y\u2019know.\u00a0 See things like that?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She shoved her hands into the pocket of her hoodie.\u00a0 \u201cWell, I knew she could see the fairies.\u00a0 Longfellow kind of likes her.\u00a0 But I didn\u2019t know to what extent she was <em>aware<\/em> of things, no.\u00a0 Paul seems kind of nervous about all of it, so I kind of assumed that maybe she would be, too.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWell, at least we know now not to assume.\u201d\u00a0 I exhaled a long breath and shook my head slowly.\u00a0 \u201cHopefully, she won\u2019t say anything like that in front of someone else.\u00a0 Saying it in front of Tala\u2019s bad enough.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhat, because Tala hasn\u2019t\u2026y\u2019know?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I frowned a little.\u00a0 Tala was curious, and smart enough to put the pieces together.\u00a0 She probably already was and just hadn\u2019t said anything.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know, Care.\u00a0 I really don\u2019t know and I wish I did.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad Kellin always seems to know what to do about this sort of thing when I don\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Birtha was barking somewhere off to our right, probably as Paul tried to wrestle her over the ward-lines.\u00a0 It was a ritual they went through every morning since they\u2019d come here, as if the dog knew that she was safer <em>inside<\/em> the lines rather than outside.\u00a0 The sheep didn\u2019t seem to care.\u00a0 Every morning, he took them over to one of the fields of grass to graze and brought them back again every afternoon.\u00a0 He\u2019d said the night before that he was going to give them another shear soon.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s weird to think about you not knowing what to do,\u201d Carolyn said as Birtha\u2019s barking faded.\u00a0 \u201cBut none of us really know what to do, do we?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cNow?\u00a0 In <em>this<\/em> world, with everything changed?\u00a0 No.\u201d\u00a0 I shook my head.\u00a0 \u201cNo, none of us really know what to do or what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We passed out of the tent, walking out over the grass and broken concrete, toward the edges of the ward lines and the staked-out perimeter Thom and Rory had put together.\u00a0 Carolyn stopped shy of the lines, staring out into the muted blue-purple sky in the west, still lightening with the dawn.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cJ.T.\u2019s been having weird dreams,\u201d she said after a moment of silence, her eyes distant.\u00a0 \u201cHe didn\u2019t want to tell you himself, but I know that he wanted you to know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Weird dreams?\u00a0 What kind of weird dreams?<\/em>\u00a0 \u201cIs he okay?\u00a0 Kellin said he\u2019d been avoiding her.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She sighed a little.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know, Mar.\u00a0 I think he thinks he is, but at the same time he knows he\u2019s not.\u00a0 What happened the other day was weird, and I know that he saw more than Drew and I did.\u201d\u00a0 She was tense, shoulders hunched as she looked at me slowly.\u00a0 \u201cHe said the dreams reminded him of his grandparents\u2019 house in Scotland, but it all looked older than that.\u00a0 And the people definitely weren\u2019t modern types.\u00a0 They\u2019re just weird dreams, he said.\u00a0 He\u2019s dreaming about ghosts.\u00a0 That\u2019s what he told me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I frowned.\u00a0 \u201cWhat makes him think he\u2019s dreaming about ghosts?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d she said softly, shoulders rising and falling in a shrug.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s just what he said, and I\u2019m worried about him.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Ghosts.\u00a0 J.T. and ghosts?<\/em><br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know what to do.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I put my arm around her shoulders and squeezed her gently.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll talk to him,\u201d I said quietly.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A tremor ran through her.\u00a0 \u201cLet me at least tell him I told you first,\u201d she said quietly, taking a shaky breath.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know that he\u2019s going to <em>want<\/em> to talk to you about it.\u00a0 He just thinks they\u2019re dreams.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cBut he\u2019s bothered enough about them to tell you, Care.\u201d\u00a0 <em>Though I wonder why he picked you to tell.\u00a0 Something going on that I\u2019m not aware of?<\/em>\u00a0 That wouldn\u2019t have surprised me.\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t been a good friend the past couple weeks, between Thom and Matt both being hurt.\u00a0 I was lucky everyone else was so damned understanding.\u00a0 \u201cDo you know when they started?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFive days ago,\u201d she said quietly.\u00a0 \u201cAfter we got chased by those things.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I shivered, touching the cold place on my arm.\u00a0 She watched me, biting her lip.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYou think they\u2019re connected.\u201d\u00a0 She paused, watching a shadow cross my face.\u00a0 \u201cNo.\u00a0 You\u2019re <em>sure<\/em> it\u2019s connected.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhat <em>happened<\/em> between here and the Shakespeare garden?\u201d\u00a0 I asked, feeling desperate worry bubble up from the pit of my stomach.\u00a0 Was Kellin right, had J.T. realized some ability that scared him badly enough he didn\u2019t want to talk about it?\u00a0 Was he going to turn into another Thom on us?<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t <em>know<\/em>,\u201d she whispered, shaking her head hard.\u00a0 \u201cAll I know is that all three of us could see those things, and there was something in the mist that saved us, but I don\u2019t know what it was.\u00a0 I think he does, though.\u201d\u00a0 She looked down at her feet.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m <em>sure<\/em> he does, but maybe he doesn\u2019t know that he does.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I stared at her for a moment, then just nodded mutely.\u00a0 <em>Great.\u00a0 How are we going to handle <\/em>this<em> now?<\/em>\u00a0 \u201cBut he\u2019s not okay.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s kind of okay,\u201d she said, then sighed.\u00a0 \u201cMostly.\u00a0 But you should talk to him before Kel does, I think.\u00a0 He might open up a little more to you.\u00a0 I think he\u2019s trying not to scare me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c<em>Could<\/em> he scare you?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She was quiet for a long moment before she shook her head and spoke softly.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cNo.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think he
