brought me a pair of shoes.\u00a0 The temperature had dropped again outside.\u00a0 Winter <em>would<\/em> come earlier than we anticipated.\u00a0 He answered me as I pulled the shoes on and we started to walk.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cJac\u2019s not really hurt, she\u2019s just exhausted,\u201d he said, sliding his arm around my shoulders again.\u00a0 I glanced at his injured hand and was happy to see that the skin had knit and the stitches had been clipped.\u00a0 The scar <em>did<\/em> look like I-75, though.\u00a0 \u201cKellin hasn\u2019t been awake, but J.T. said she\u2019s fine.\u00a0 Rory\u2019s up and around.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cSomething happened to Rory?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Matt blinked at me and nodded.\u00a0 He gave me the brief version of what I\u2019d missed during the fight.\u00a0 I must have gotten some kind of horrified look on my face when he mentioned Tala joining the fight, because he frowned at me.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s the matter?\u00a0 She\u2019s fine.\u00a0 She clotheslined a few of them.\u201d\u00a0 Matt grinned.\u00a0 \u201cI was impressed, honestly.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never seen her fight.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I shook my head a little, mouth dry.\u00a0 <em>She\u2019s going to have to tell someone about being pregnant\u2014someone other than me\u2014sooner rather than later.<\/em>\u00a0 I could understand why she\u2019d run in, though.\u00a0 The rest of us had been in trouble by then, it sounded like, and she wasn\u2019t the type to stand by when her friends were in trouble.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m okay,\u201d I lied, shaking my head a little.\u00a0 \u201cJust a little surprised.\u00a0 Greg got into it, too?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Matt grinned.\u00a0 \u201cYeah, it was pretty epic.\u00a0 If it hadn\u2019t been life or death, it could\u2019ve been a movie.\u201d\u00a0 He squeezed me, the grin fading.\u00a0 \u201cEveryone\u2019s okay.\u00a0 Everyone that was in the fight, anyway.\u00a0 J.T.\u2019s still got Thom tied down, though.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c<em>Tied<\/em> down?\u201d\u00a0 I arched a brow, looking up at my brother.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWell, limiting his mobility, anyway.\u00a0 To hear J.T. talk about it, it sounds like Thom undid almost three weeks worth of healing in the space of about five minutes, trying to get to you after the thing threw you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I winced.\u00a0 \u201cBut he\u2019s okay?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s about the same as usual,\u201d Matt said.\u00a0 \u201cWorried as hell about you.\u00a0 The first day or two wasn\u2019t bad, trying to keep him in one spot, because he didn\u2019t want to leave you.\u00a0 Then Rory and I convinced him that he needed to be helping Davon coordinate all this digging and construction, so he\u2019s been out here all day.\u201d\u00a0 Matt pointed ahead of us.\u00a0 I could see J.T. leaning over Thom, who was sprawled in a chair with his ankle propped up on a box.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cJ.T. didn\u2019t tell him I was all right?\u201d I asked as my heart started to beat a little faster.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cTelling and <em>knowing<\/em> are two entirely different things, Mar.\u201d\u00a0 Matt grinned and squeezed me, then let go.\u00a0 \u201cGo make his day, I\u2019ve got to get back to work.\u00a0 Trying to solder together some more pipes to lay into those trenches.\u00a0 Heating conduits.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I nodded, smiling back.\u00a0 \u201cThanks, Matt.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAnytime.\u201d\u00a0 He pecked me on the cheek and headed off in another direction.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then I realized something.\u00a0 <em>Leah.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t say when she came back.\u00a0 <\/em>\u201cMatt?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He turned, cocking his head to one side.\u00a0 \u201cWhat is it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhen did Leah come back?\u00a0 After the fight, I\u2019m guessing.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He looked momentarily startled by the question, then frowned, shaking his head slightly.\u00a0 \u201cNo, she didn\u2019t come back.\u00a0 After we got you guys settled, Drew and I went back out to look.\u00a0 We found her sprawled near the wards.\u00a0 Not a mark on her.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t remember a damn thing that happened that day after she woke up.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cOh,\u201d was all I could say.\u00a0 I nodded a little.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYou okay?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYeah,\u201d I said, forcing a smile.\u00a0 \u201cYeah, I\u2019m fine.\u00a0 I was just curious, that\u2019s all.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Matt nodded.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a good thing she was out there, though.\u00a0 Can you imagine what that would\u2019ve turned out like, if they\u2019d hit us completely unawares with all of us clustered together?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My stomach fluttered.\u00a0 \u201cYeah, that would have been bad.\u201d\u00a0 I swallowed and waved a hand.\u00a0 \u201cGo on, get back to work.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got stuff that needs to get done.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cPretty sure you will, too, soon.\u201d\u00a0 Matt winked at me, waved, and headed back to work.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I turned and started walking toward J.T. and
