Twenty-five – 02

[This post is from Cameron’s point of view.]

The mare made a sound, shifting, and a second later he heard the sound of footsteps—ones that had become as familiar to him as the sound of his own breath. Cameron unconsciously stretched his hand out toward the sound. A moment later, he found Neve’s fingers twining through his and squeezing gently.

“I thought you’d be trying to get some rest,” he said quietly.

“It’s hard when you’re not there,” she murmured, stepping toward him and pressing herself against his back. Her free arm slid around his waist, holding him close. “It’s going to be an early morning. I figured you’d come to bed equally early. Sounds like a lot of people are.”

“They’ll be back sooner than we think,” he murmured, bowing his head. He leaned forward against the horse’s flank and Neve leaned with him, her cheek against his spine, her breath stirring the hairs on the back of his neck.

“How do you know?”

“I just know.” Cameron closed his eyes and sighed. “Do you want me to come to bed?”

“Only if you think you’ll sleep,” Neve said. “Do you?”

“No.”

She nodded a little. “Then don’t. Do you want company?”

“I wouldn’t mind it.”

He could feel her smile. “Then I’ll stay.” She squeezed him a little. “You’re not all right.”

“No.”

“Fretting won’t do you or anyone else any good, Cam.” She pressed a kiss to the back of his neck.

He huffed a soft laugh. “I’m not fretting. I’m trying to make a decision.”

“Oh?”

He nodded, straightening slightly and starting to brush the mare again. Neve let go of his hand to wrap her other arm around his waist. She stood there, holding him in silence.

She was waiting, and he knew it—they both knew it. If there was no other proof for him that they were soul mates, that was it. That was it.
